Backgammon

Roll the dice and race your fifteen checkers around the board into your home board, then bear them off. Land on a lone enemy checker to send it back to the bar. Win by bearing off all fifteen — and use the doubling cube to raise the stakes.

How to play Backgammon

  1. Each player has fifteen checkers. You race them around the board in opposite directions and into your own home board, then bear them off. First to bear off all fifteen wins.
  2. Roll two dice and play each number as a separate move. Doubles are played four times.
  3. A checker moves the exact number shown. You may not land on a point holding two or more enemy checkers.
  4. Land on a point with a single enemy checker and it is hit — it goes to the bar, and its owner must re-enter it before moving anything else.
  5. Enter from the bar into your opponent’s home board using the die rolled. If the entry point is blocked, you lose that die.
  6. If neither die can be played, you forfeit the turn.
  7. Bearing off only begins once every one of your checkers is in your home board and none are on the bar. A die larger than the distance may be used only when no checker sits exactly that far from the off tray.
  8. Doubling cube: before rolling, offer to double the stake. Your opponent either accepts (the cube doubles and they play on) or declines and concedes the current stake. Only the cube owner may double again.
  9. Scoring: a plain win is one point, a gammon (loser bore off nothing) is two, and a backgammon (loser bore off nothing and still has a checker in the winner’s home board or on the bar) is three. All are multiplied by the cube.
